The striped skunk, most commonly seen in open spaces, back yards, and under porches, is a mammal and a member of the weasel family. They are typically about the same size as cats, yet have stout bodies, small heads, short legs, bushy tails and thick, glossy, black fur. The white stripe down the centre of the face continues along each side of their backs. Their tails are mostly black, but stripes may extend down them to the tip of their tails.

Skunks can be found in every province in Ontario. They are thought to be useful animals on farmlands, grasslands, and forests because they help to control pests such as grubs, mice, and larvae. A typical skunk weighs in at 3.25 kilograms and measures approximately 57.5-80 centimetres in length. The average lifespan of skunks in the wild is approximately 3 years.

In a residential setting, skunks will make their dens under any structure that has no foundation. This activity will cause weaknesses in decks, sheds and/or porches. A nocturnal animal, they are known to chew through wood and siding which causes significant damage.

Renowned for the terrible odour that it emits, a skunk uses the bad smell to protect itself during mating, or when frightened or injured. It is quite a job to remove the smell from houses, buildings, or the unfortunate dog who crosses its path.
